Blizzard bans 250,000 Overwatch 2 cheaters, says its AI that analyses voice chat is warning naughty players and can often ‘correct negative behaviour immediately’-

Overwatch 2 has not been having a good time of it in 2023. May brought the unwelcome news that Blizzard’s original plans for the game’s post-launch support were being changed, mainly the promised “original vision” of PvE story content. Players in the main hated this, with many pointing out this was why Overwatch 2 was considered a necessary sequel in the first place. Shortly afterwards the game was released on Steam, and this discontent found its expression in Steam review bombing.

Blizzard has for the most part decided it’s best to keep schtum and get on with improving the game, and amid all the disappointments and groaning it’s important to remember that Overwatch 2, for all its faults, is a pretty good time and still has a huge player base. It has also, like every popular competitive shooter, become more active about how it combats toxic behaviour and cheating.

Last Epoch director assures fans it’s ‘here to stay’ despite a rocky launch and flood of negative Steam reviews-

Over 300,000 eager players rushed to play Last Epoch when it launched last week and the servers quickly collapsed under the weight. The widespread connection issues that followed led to a slew of negative Steam reviews that knocked its “mostly positive” rating down to “mixed”.

The worst of those issues now seem to be over, but the initial reactions still sit permanently on the game’s Steam page. In a post reflecting on the launch yesterday, game director Judd Cobler seems confident the team can turn the sentiment around.

“While we’re continuing to receive high praise about the game itself, Steam reviews and sentiment took a heavy hit due to the initial turbulence of online services at launch,” Cobler wrote. “We are committed to regaining that trust by making improvements to our backend infrastructure for this amount of load and providing a great experience for online play.”

Cobler assured fans that “Last Epoch is here to stay,” and that they can “expect updat…

Larian publishing director on mass layoffs- ‘None of these companies are at risk of going bankrupt. They were just at risk of pissing off the shareholders’-

Speaking with Game File (users will encounter a paywall) at the Game Developers Choice Awards, Larian director of publishing Michael Douse gave his take on the current state of the industry, including some sharp criticism on the wave after wave of mass layoffs we’ve been seeing.

“They are an avoidable fuck-up,” Douse said. “That’s all they really are. That’s why you see one after the other. Because companies are going: ‘Well, finally. Now we can, too. We’ve wanted to do it for ages. Everyone else is. So why don’t we?’ That’s really kind of sick.”

Though Douse allowed that big publishers are complicated operations that can’t react quickly to new demands or market changes, he argued that better planning and leadership could have prevented the worst of what we’re seeing, and expressed frustration with how the industry continues with its business as usual in glitzy events like the GDC Awards or BAFTAs: “We should be humbled by this period. It doesn’t feel like we’re humbled …

Magic and gunpowder-powered ‘souls-lite’ Flintlock- The Siege of Dawn is bringing a demo to Steam Next Fest-

A new trailer for upcoming gunpowder and magic action RPG Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn has debuted at this year’s PC Gaming Show. It shows protagonist Nor and tricky spirit Enki at work dismembering the undead and other servants of the vicious gods with axes, pistols, bombs, and magical spells. The biggest news is that Flintlock launches later this summer and that a demo will be out during the upcoming Steam Next Fest that’s running from June 10-14.

The new trailer shows blasted landscapes we’re familiar with from previous Flintlock trailers reminiscent of Napoleonic battlefields with trenches, wattle walls, and shell impacts. It also shows some environments we haven’t seen too much of yet, like monster-haunted interiors of ancient temples, colorfully vibrant desert river canyons with lush greenery and ancient ruins, and some very lived-in looking towns of whitewashed walls and red tile roofs.

There’s also plenty of Flintlock’s faster-paced combat on show here. No…
